Chapter Eight

Since this was Fairview, the rain just kept getting worse, and since Cy was not a Fairviewer who carried an umbrella or a good dose of stoicism right next to their ID, getting indoors seemed like a grand idea.

How his damn sister went skipping through the rain without even pulling her hood up, Cy would never understand, nor how half the students he passed on his walk through Whitehall Square Park disregarded the rain just as easily. Cy could already feel a cold trickle running down his spine and making him shiver. He passed through the Park’s northern gate, which had been erected as a memorial for someone long dead and stood there without any wall for it to make sense. Just like this doesn’t make any sense. I deserve something that I want? Since when do I want… someone in my life? Cy cursed under his breath, managing to stop just short of the spray of rainwater created by a taxi crossing through a puddle right in front of him. Maybe if I can’t think the word boyfriend, that means I don’t need one. Or want one. Or should have one. Or should be thinking about having one.

The guest house came into view, and Cy dashed up the stairs, savoring the relatively dry spot to be found under the awning. The doorbells were numbered, and Leon was in apartment four. All Cy had to do was push the button and see if Leon would let him up, and if he didn’t, Cy could just go back to pretending to be a student.

And if he lets me in… Cy wasn’t even sure where he wanted that train of thought to go. There were about a dozen excellent reasons why someone in his life wasn’t convenient. Cy lived in Morrowvale, he worked a lot, had just started his business with his glassblower partner a few years ago, and Leon taught here, seemed to move around a lot and… well. Leon was exciting, not human, and without a doubt a lot smarter than Cy could ever hope to be, no matter how many dinner lectures he’d been subjected to.

Cy’s finger had half risen to the doorbell, but he stopped himself before actually ringing. Leon was smart and gorgeous and able to make people laugh, and he was a powerful supernatural creature. Cy ground his teeth and dropped his arm. Someone like that -- no matter how nice or kind -- would not be able to stand someone like Cy for very long.

“You’ve not been waiting there long, have you?”

Cy turned. Leon, umbrella in one hand, grocery bag in the other, stood at the bottom of the stairs. His luminous bronze eyes looked up at Cy, and those coral lips were curved upward.

“I… I just…” Cy indicated the doorbell as if the doorbell were at fault when all it had ever done was simply being a doorbell.

Leon took the stairs gracefully. Damn, he was lithe, and knowing he was a type of snake-demon made that make sense.
